There are people who are persistent, people who persevere no matter what. These people have a goal; they go for it and don’t give up, regardless of the obstacles that may come their way. Then there are those who just dream. They have dreams, but don’t make any effort towards making those dreams reality. Finally, there are those who have a goal, work towards it, but when it gets tough they quit. They don’t persevere. They go for it while it’s fun, new, and somewhat easy. However, when things get tough or require extra effort, they just quit.
I wish I could say I relate most to the first person, but I relate most to that last person. I have the HARDEST TIME finishing things. I can’t tell you how many books and bible studies currently sit on my bookshelf started, but unfinished. When I say unfinished, I mean I made it to the last few pages, but never finished. Why? I honestly don’t know. I have many hobbies I started, but never actually worked at them long enough to have any finished products. I’m thinking a lot of it has to do with work. A lot of these things take hard work, discipline and lots of effort.
Hand lettering and calligraphy is the hobby I’ve stuck with the longest, and even then there have been times where I get frustrated and want to give up. I see so many others that are much better than me, and I just want to quit. I don’t quit because I truly enjoy it, but like any new skill it takes hard work and discipline to learn and get better. There are times where practicing is easy, but other days I want to quit halfway through my hour of practice.
Whatever we may be working towards, it doesn’t just happen overnight. Work is required. Don’t quit. Don’t quit in the first five minutes and don’t quit in the last ten minutes. Be persistent. Go after your goal with all you’ve got. Work hard, study hard, practice hard. Sometimes, quitting is a good thing. We do have to know when to quit, but we also need to know when NOT to quit. In my case, I need to get over my laziness, put in the work, and go after my goals.
I’ve decided that this year, I’m done being a quitter. What about you? What goals/dreams are you working towards that are not worth giving up on? I’m not saying it’s going to be easy, but I do believe that I can persevere through my laziness, and honor God by giving my best in all that I do. I believe you can too.
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
